Round-Up Of Tips For Managing Relationship Conflict
- Open the dialog by choosing a mutually good
time and place.
- Plan ahead and weigh up all sides to the story.
- Talk directly and calmly (and don't patronize!)
- Don't blame or name-call.
- Give information and try and explain your view. (reasonably)
- Actively listen.
- Do the unpredictable. Take the lead.
- Talk it through and work on a win-win solution.
- Follow through.
Above all "separate the emotional from the financial!"
This is one of the key Streetwise strategies that I swear by. Basically
it means "tame hot blood with a cool head."
If none of this works, then it's time to get help!
Try mediation. Individuals, courts and businesses are turning more
and more to mediation to help resolve disputes. Mediators do not
make decisions for people--they help people make their own decisions
less emotionally.
Where to find help
- Schools, colleges, universities.
- Local or state consumer protection offices.
- Community or neighborhood dispute resolution centers.
- Local government - district attorney, small claims court, family
services.
- Private organizations listed in the telephone directory's Yellow
Page under Arbitration or Mediation services.
Whatever challenges you face in your personal or professional relationships,
I can probably help you find your way through relationship conflict
towards constructive resolution.
